Why should I eat different apples?

Recently a family member asked why I didn’t have red delicious apples since that is all she ever has eaten. I replied that I enjoy a variety because they all have a little different flavor and crunch.

She said she thought an apple was an apple so assumed that was all she needed to know.

There are many different varieties of apples and all contain good sources of fiber, vitamins and antioxidants. Apples are renowned for their health benefits.

There are red apples, green apples, yellow apples and now even pink apples. The varieties include Red Delicious, Granny Smith, MacIntosh, Braeburn, Rome, Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious, Winesap, Pippin, Jonagold, Pink Lady and the list goes on. There are about 2500 varieties grown in the United States. Each variety has a bit of a different flavor profile. Apples can be crisp, soft, sweet or tart depending on the variety and growing conditions. Due to their flavor and texture, some apples are best used in different types of cooking applications.

I prefer to use a fruit that is sweet for a pie instead of tart variety. Red Delicious are good cut up in salads. Golden Delicious are good for fruit trays as they resist browning. You can make applesauce, apple cider, apple butter and apple juice with different varieties! Of course, all are good for eating fresh!

Apples can be found in different sizes depending on your preference and desired use. There are lunch box sizes and large apples that I like to use in cooking so I have fewer to cut. Medium sized is the best to eat out of hand.

The average sized apple has about 80 calories and is packed with nutrition. The larger the apple, the more calories as in any food. Similar sized apples have similar nutritional content as well. Whenever possible eat the skin where a multitude of nutrition is stored.

We have all heard an apple a day keeps the doctor away. So it is important to say, the healthiest apple is the one you will eat every day. If your favorite is a Red Delicious eat that. If you occasionally enjoy a Fuji, that is great too!
